Happy 2017! Hopefully 2016 was a good year for your organisation, with strong sales, increased revenue and profits, lots more customers, marketing greatness and better products and performance.
A kick-ass marketing strategy will have played a role in that success, but there’s always room for improvement and it doesn’t have to cost a fortune to get the right results. Let’s not rest on our laurels or get complacent. It’s now 2017 and time to think about how we can make things even better.
Whether 2016 was a beauty or a stinker, let’s make sure that 2017 is a year to remember. Here are 9 ideas for achieving marketing success on a budget in the coming 12 months.
1 Be social
Savviness on social networks is a must, just as it was at the start of 2016, but it’s worth reiterating! Create business accounts and participate in the big social media sites – Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. If you are more B2B-orientated then focus on LinkedIn. If you sell clothes, jewellery or homeware then Pinterest is a must. Check out this blog to find the right social network for your organisation.
2 Try infographics
Infographics are bright, colourful and dynamic. They stand out from the crowd on social media, and can show a company’s expertise and professionalism as well as a sense of fun. Hiring a designer can be expensive, so why not try doing it yourself. If you have some understanding of Adobe Illustrator, try out these free vector kits that provide all the elements needed to make a stunning infographic.
3 Make videos
Video content is valuable and increasingly popular. While it can cost a fortune to get pro YouTube videos produced, why not give it a shot yourself? Wistia offers a video tutorial showing you how to shoot expert-looking footage on your smartphone. If you find that a struggle, could you hire a tech whizz from a local college? You’ll get a nice video and they’ll get vital experience and a bit of extra cash for 2017.
4 Recycle content
Fantastic content doesn’t necessarily have to be brand new. Creating content can be time-consuming and difficult for busy people. Furthermore, there are occasions when you produce something rather marvellous and feel that it is undersold by only being posted once. Never be afraid to mash-up your old content – chances are there will be a tonne of people who never even saw your old stuff, so it will be a fresh content piece for a large segment of your audience. Maybe turn a webinar into a video tutorial, or a blog into an infographic.
5 Get discount ads
While massive ad campaigns may be out of your budget, discounts and coupons are often available for paid Facebook ads or Google ads. It may actually be that you get discount codes through your web-hosting services. For example, Bluehost.com members get $200 in free advertising with Google and Bing when they purchase a domain name. Use these discounts to your advantage in 2017.
6 Tool up
There are some useful marketing tools out there which can save time and generate great results for you in 2017. For example, use Google’s Keyword Planner to identify a list of valuable terms and phrases to target in the SERPs (search engine result pages). Having identified these terms, brainstorm article ideas to target these terms. This kind of exercise ensures that the content does as much work as possible.
7 Don’t forget offline
In an online age, there’s something to be said for going au naturel and exercising a little #InRealLife marketing in 2017. If you’re targeting a particular area, go old school with flyers and poster in coffee shops or go Guerilla by writing your Twitter handle in chalk on the pavement!
8 Amazing business cards
Get yourself some snazzy business cards, not just those 100-for-a-quid, last-minute efforts you can buy at service stations on the way to a conference. Inject personality and try to make a statement about yourself and your business. Every handshake should come with a business card. The more people who find out about your business, the better.
9 Apply for Business Awards
President Obama effectively awarded himself a medal in January when he received the Medal for Distinguished Public Service. It’s always nice to get some bling, but much better when it’s someone else who picks you out as a winner. Most industries have business awards you can win, providing you with an online badge you can place on your website. Badges like these can boost credibility, and can increase sales. Show off your marketing greatness!
